How to Store Bread Properly (Most People Do It Wrong)

Bread can be considered staple food, but interestingly enough, people have misconceptions about bread storage. They either do not know how to keep bread from going bad, which leads to waste.

For example, one misconception is that storing bread in a refrigerator keeps it fresh longer. In fact, it speeds up the process of staling because of rapid dehydration.

As for correct bread storage methods, storing it in a cool dry place will yield great results when done properly. Bread boxes and paper bags serve this purpose perfectly by ensuring air circulation and moisture retention while keeping bread crust intact.

Plastic bags should not be used for storing artisan bread since moisture condensation can cause artisan bread to become damp. Plastic bags should be used only for softer bread loaves that have been purchased at a supermarket.

Another important thing to remember is that bread needs to be frozen, if it will be stored for an extended period. It is always recommended to slice bread prior to freezing to ensure the convenience of using only part of the loaf.

Another trick to consider would be storing artisan bread loaves without slicing them. This approach increases bread's shelf life considerably.

The hard word search puzzles with diagonals and reversed words are the only ones that actually challenge my dad. He's 78 and clears "medium" packs in two minutes.
